The White Hill of Montmartre
Montmartre was an independent village, with its own town hall and vineyards, until Paris annexed it in 1860 to make it the 18th arrondissement. On this hill, the highest point in the city, painters with barely any money later moved in, along with a cabaret with a rabbit for an emblem and the only vineyard still growing inside Paris, while a white basilica slowly rose on the summit. It's about 2.5 km, with some slopes and stretches of stairs: Montmartre is, literally, a hill.
“This basilica is younger than it looks: construction began in 1875 and it wasn't consecrated until 1919, making it almost as recent as the Eiffel Tower. It was built with a special limestone brought from Château-Landon that secretes its own calcite every time it rains and effectively cleans itself, which is why it's still this white more than a century later, with barely any restoration. Now look at the portico of the main entrance: above it stand two bronze statues, each mounted on horseback. How many equestrian statues flank the entrance?”
